Residential Aged Care
Our residential aged care residents have celebrated NAIDOC Week with a variety of Social Engagement activities.
12th July 2024
This week we have thoroughly enjoyed celebrating and recognising the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Now, as NAIDOC Week slowly comes to an end, let’s take a look at some of the ways our residential aged care residents commemorated the occasion:
SwanCare Ningana enjoyed an interactive and immersive presentation staff titled ‘Exploring NAIDOC.’ Residents learnt all about the Noongar seasons, and had the opportunity to smell and touch some native plants. They also worked together on handcrafting a beautiful NAIDOC Week poster.
Over at SwanCare Kingia and Tandara, residents enjoyed learning about Aboriginal culture through various activities in art and music. One of their favourites included decorating a map of Australia by applying the traditional Indigenous dot-painting technique.
Among many other activities, residents at SwanCare Waminda particularly enjoyed creating and designing their own rain sticks. Historically in Aboriginal culture, it’s said the sticks were used to summon rain in Australia’s dry outback. And considering the past few days, we think their creations may have worked a little too well!
