SwanCare’s Feathers Wrap Up: May 2019

Feathers Logo

Congratulations to Dubravka Mrzic, Housekeeping Attendant Waminda, for taking out the top Feathers Award in May for the category of Compassion.
    Feathers Winner May 2019

This month, we’re taking moment to celebrate the wonderful Duda (Dubravka) for the incredible impact she has on residents as she goes about her day-to-day work. The daughter of one of our late residents reached out to SwanCare to thank Duda for her kindness.

“…A beautiful lady who kept Mum’s room clean would talk to her about Croatia. That was very special to Mum. Since my grandmother and great aunt passed away in the 60s, there wasn’t anyone for Mum to talk with about Croatia. Then, this lovely lady came into Mum’s life. You made a huge difference to Mum’s last days. Thank you so much.”

This special individual is, of course, our very own Duda.

SwanCare’s Feathers nominations offer a ‘fly in the wall’ insight SwanCare. They show acts of generosity, gratitude and friendship. A common thread in our Feathers nominations this month is teamwork and mateship. From Cecilia Bray who spends Friday night baking for our resident’s morning tea, to Isabella Crellin who stayed back to assist a colleague with their CV Check, to Jeff who came to work on his day off… we couldn’t be more proud of our SwanCare family.

Category Winners

Customer Service: Bernadette Wyld, Tandara

This month, we’re recognising Bernadette for her endless dedication. As the person nominating her wrote, “Bernadette has been my father's favourite carer over the last 18 months. She has a smile, good humour, and a sense of hope. Dad can be difficult, but she gets him to cooperate. Recently, he has been a little unwell and not feeling like eating. Bea works with him to find something he can at least nibble at. Nothing seems to be too much trouble for Bea; even on some of the more stressful days.” Well done Bernadette!

Improvements, Innovation and Creativity: Arnel Braulio, Clinical Nurse Coordinator, Kingia/Tandara

This month, Arnel has taken out the Innovation Award for creating a new spreadsheet to monitor residents’ weights and identifying residents experiencing significant weight loss. The spreadsheet  streamlines work, saves time, and allows staff to take immediate action to address issues. The Clinical Management Team have adopted the spreadsheet for our Quality Indicator Reporting. As the person who nominated Arnel wrote, “In a recent unannounced visit to Waminda, the assessors were shown this initiative - and they have indicated they will build upon it. Thank you Arnie for your knowledge and innovation to help the whole Clinical Management Team.” Fantastic work Arnel!

Leadership, Amal Zainuden, Registered Nurse, Kingia

In May, we acknowledge Amal for going above and beyond in her busy role. “Amal has recently taken on K2 permanently for the beginning of the week. With 50 residents (plus their family and friends), our staff and visiting doctors on the floor … this is no easy task. I know this is her job - but Amal has shown such amazing conscientiousness. She never leaves work by clock off time and regularly comes in more than an hour earlier. Thank you Amal for being an amazing leader and being a truly wonderful role model.”

Safety Awareness, Amal Zainuden, Registered Nurse, Kingia

Amal has also taken out the award for safety this month! Unfortunately, 11 staff cars were broken into in May, but Amal addressed the incident swiftly to ensure everyone’s safety. “Amal called security and the police. He consoled and assisted staff to go home safely and made sure all the correct managers were informed in a prompt manner.” Thank you so much Amal.

Learning and Development, Michael Bermejo, Assistant in Nursing, Kingia

In May, we recognise Michael for assisting a colleague in learning how to order stock during a particularly pressing time. “Michael made an effort to take the time and learn the HILMAS system together. He is a blessing – especially since Peter in K1 has been away and I’ve had two floors to look after. It’s been a huge help knowing I can totally trust Michael. Thank you.”

Effective recognition, Tanya Rose, Assistant in Nursing and Activities Officer, Kingia

This month, we thank Tanya for her words of appreciation which make staff feel valued and recognised for their work. “Tanya recognises staff when they go beyond their duties and responsibilities. Thank you Tanya for always acknowledging staff for the work they do.”

Teamwork, Jeffrey De Asis, Assistant in Nursing / Activities Officer, Kingia

Jeff always lends a hand and approaches work with a smile. “Jeff is reliable and dependable; he always offers to cover shifts. Recently, I had some difficulty covering shifts in the lifestyle department. I contacted Jeff who split his shifts, without hesitation, so he could work as a carer and an activities officer. He works between both buildings, and on all floors, when asked. Jeff also came in on his day off to assist. He does this all with a smile, he works well with other staff, and keeps residents happy. Your help and support is truly appreciated. Thank you Jeff.”

Team Nomination:

Admin (Main administration office)

Heather Laws, Isabella Crellin, Samantha Ellis

It is characteristic of SwanCare staff to work outside the boundaries of job descriptions.

This month, Heather, Isabella and Sam did just that.

“The team assisted a resident to move her furniture out of her unit after it flooded, enabling the contractors to remove the excess water. This isn’t within this team's job description - they just assisted someone in need. Well done!”
