This year marks an extraordinary milestone for our Finance Officer, Kim George, who is celebrating 45 years of dedicated service at SwanCare. For Kim, reaching this anniversary is a moment of pride and reflection, “I am proud to have reached this milestone. I can’t quite believe I have spent 70% of my life working for the residents of this community. I have enjoyed my working life.”
Kim’s journey at SwanCare - Swan Cottage Homes at the time - began in a rather special way. She was personally brought into the office by SwanCare’s founder, Richard Cleaver, who had known her through her previous role at a banking agency that was contracting for the village. When that agency could no longer continue, Mr. Cleaver stepped in, not wanting to lose the valuable service that brought Kim along with it. Initially trained for reception at the soon-to-open Tandara Care facility, Kim quickly proved her worth and was kept in the main Administration office.
Her first role involved a variety of tasks, from answering phones on the PABX, typing, duplicating newsletters with wax stencils and manually preparing electricity and gas invoices for residents, which she still does today, only now using modern equipment.
Over the years, Kim’s career has evolved significantly. She has worn many hats; managing payroll, handling fee billing, serving as an Admissions Officer and working with various CFOs in the Finance department. Her flexibility and willingness to embrace different roles have been fundamental to her success.
Among her many cherished memories, one that stood out was when she helped an elderly gentleman transition from a neglected home into Bentley Park village, where he spent his final years surrounded by community. “I was proud to have started the process for him,” Kim recalled.
When asked about the most important lesson she’s learned, Kim shared, “That the small things we can do make a big difference to our residents.” Her advice to newcomers? “Be kind and listen. Our residents have led remarkable lives.”
As she looks ahead to retirement next year, Kim is excited to spend more time with her husband and dive into the many books she’s been waiting to read. Her legacy at SwanCare is one of compassion and dedication, a true inspiration to all.
Thank you for all that you’ve done, Kim. Congratulations on 45 years of SwanCare!
